Project Overview
Cruden Building worked closely with Tollcross Housing Association as the main design and build contractor, delivering modern, quality and energy-efficient new homes together with a new purpose-built office headquarters to provide an “easily accessible one-stop-shop” for residents, employees and committee members.
This landmark development has been named as an exemplar with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland naming this stunning project amongst the top 18 buildings in Scotland in 2020.
The Homes
We breathed new life into this area and demolished old, tenement blocks and replaced them with much needed modern, energy-efficient and sustainably designed accommodation.
The 47 new homes sit adjacent to the new headquarters of Tollcross Housing Association. The homes comprise of 6 x terraced houses, 8 x cottage flats and 33 x flats. The modern homes have photovoltaic panels, open balconies, gardens, large feature windows and new streetscaping to create a real sense of the community. We also specially designed four of the homes for wheelchair users. The new homes are cheaper to heat and run, thanks to the raft of energy saving measures that we introduced.
The Headquarters
Together with the new homes, Tollcross Housing Association wanted to provide an aspirational new building which would be spacious and comfortable for all users, including employees, tenants and committee members.
We built the modern, open plan offices by linking them to a central sculptural staircase and used a steel frame and concrete floors. The elegant new office is shared by the Association, the local community and the committee. It was important that the building would be an open, inclusive workplace that was at the heart of the Tollcross community.
The new headquarters does exactly that with a calm, contemplative office space with views overlooking the park to the north and the continued regeneration to the south, marking a new era for the organisation, its historic neighbourhood and community.
