On Friday 14th June 2010 the contacts for the new Lancansterian SEN School were signed at Manchester City Council's head office Heron House.

Lancasterian is a specialist school for communication and interaction dedicated to supporting children aged between 2 to 16 with physical and mental disabilities. The School was established in 1906 and has been servicing the needs of the pupils for over a century.

The occasion was a real celebration for the school as the contract signing event marks the start of the transformation of the school.

The teams from Cruden, Manchester City Council and other partners on the contract gathered together to witness the formal signing of the contracts and to watch a presentation from Anustan Rajasegaran a pupil from the School who described a day in his life and explained the difficulties the current school presented to him each day.

All the children were provided with goody bags to celebrate the start of a very special school build which will provide much needed improvements for the children, staff and parents of Lancasterian SEN School.

Now the contracts are signed the project is due to commence on the 7th June 2010 and will be complete within 52 weeks. In order that the school can remain in occupation during the course of the works a construction programme and phasing strategy has been developed with the school. There are six phases to complete the works within the building and external works. Each internal phase predominantly includes the following works;

Replacement of roof coverings
Asbestos removal
Window replacement
Refurbishment of heating systems and boilers
Replacement of electrical lighting and power
New partitions and doors
Suspended ceilings
Decoration and floor coverings
External canopies
Landscaping

The school and pupils have been heavily involved with the design process and selection of materials for finishes and are eagerly waiting for work to commence.
