The Cruden diggers have demolished Castlefields shopping centre clearing the way for an £11m village square.
Residents watched industrial vehicles ripped the building to pieces on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th May 2010.
The demolition of the precinct, which has stood since Castlefields was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, paves the way for the village square, with completion expected in 2011. The revamped centre will feature new shops, a library, a cafe, health centre, affordable homes, better street lighting, revamped transport facilities and a 'vibrant public square'.
Halton MP Derek Twigg has hailed the £11m Castlefields Village Square project as 'crucial' to the area. Mr Twigg was joined by Janitha Redmond, Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) Area Manager, Residents, Councillors and Cruden's team to see the project's progress.
The square is part of a £93m drive to regenerate the estate. So far developers Plus Dane, Liverpool Housing Trust, Halton Borough Council and the HCA have smashed 900 unpopular 'streets-in-the-sky' flats, built 600 homes and established Phoenix Park.
Mr Twigg said: "This development is crucial to Castlefields and Halton's future. It is an excellent example of the public and private sectors working together to achieve improvements for residents."
Claire Griffiths, of Plus Dane, said: "We are delighted that work has started on this exciting development, Castlefields residents are passionate, enthusiastic and committed to their community. They told us what they want and we aim to deliver."
The Village Square is due to be completed in 2011. Demolition of the existing centre is underway and will be completed by the end of June 2010.
