St Georges Community Centre in Collyhurst Manchester has been given a new lease of life. In August 2011 the Cruden Small Works Team handed the revitalized building back to the local community who are truly delighted with the positive changes.
The Manchester City Council, Framework One project commenced in January 2011 with the objective to redevelop the centre to create a safe, secure and welcoming facility for the local community.
The £767'000 works entailed the part demolition of the existing structure and construction of a new extension to the front and side and refurbishment to the remaining building. The buildings thermal properties were upgraded, a new fully DDA compliant kitchen added, the dilapidated toilets remodeled, a new plant room created and a dedicated and secure entrance hall incorporated to protect and serve the centers many users.
The centre is not only used for an out of school play scheme and holiday club but also by the wider community. Local MP surgeries are held there to listen and act on behalf of the community.
The two local schools, on the same road, extensively make use of the facilities and therefore it was only appropriate the building was designed with the local community input, where the children had a say in the colour scheme and features.
The end result is self-evident, the local community is exceptionally pleased and the children love the vibrant colours and bespoke design features of the building, namely the variously shaped windows. After school club member Jamie Wilds commented "The new building is bigger, brighter and more colorful than the old club. It is more enjoyable with the new places to hang and chill with my friends"
