The Mayor of East Cheshire Borough, Councillor Margaret Simon, formally laid the foundation stone of Belong Crewe at a ceremony held on Thursday, January 28th.
Flanked by General Manager of the village, Melanie Saywell, and Tracy Paine, Operations Director of Belong, Councillor Simon trowelled in the cement and gave the seal of civic approval to the town's groundbreaking £7.9 million community village.
On a chilly winter's morning, a small ray of sunshine filtered through to greet the guests which included Councillor Dorothy Flude (the Mayor of Crewe), David Hopkins (Chair of the CLS Board), John Dunning, (Chief Executive, of South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce) and many local councillors.
After the ceremony, guests assembled at The Crewe Arms Hotel where Damian Utton, author of 'Designing Homes For People With Dementia' and a Director of Pozzoni, the architects for the scheme, outlined the philosophy behind the village design for the Mayor.
Councillor Simon said she could tell that the new village would be a great credit to Crewe and the facilities would be warmly welcomed by the residents and by people living in the community.
"When my year of office is finished and the village is complete, I am going to come back and have a good look round!", she said.
