Graythwaite has taken top prize in the Northern Design Awards.

The six bedroom detached home in Prestbury, designed by architects Calderpeel for Hillcrest Homes, beat off stiff competition from other luxury home builders to claim the Coutts Bank sponsored award for Best Home in the £1 Million and above category.

The awards were organised as part of The Design Weekend, a home interiors and garden fair staged at Tatton Park in Knutsford earlier this month.

Entries were received from the creators of some of Cheshire's finest properties as well as those operating in prime locations across the region. The judging panel included influential architects and designers and also Joanne Beedles, Editor of interiors magazine Design et al, who helped organise the awards.

Judges assessed entries on the standard of their external and internal architecture, the quality of the technical build and materials used, the property's environmental impact and its viability and value for money as a domestic home.

The Hillcrest team collected the award at a glamorous black tie dinner held at Tatton Park's prestigious mansion house.

Says Hillcrest Homes Managing Director, Mike Kennedy: "The property's precious location, overlooking Prestbury Golf Course, gave us the inspiration and the desire to create something very special indeed. We had a very clear vision of how we wanted the home to look and feel and the team at Calderpeel expertly interpreted our vision and turned it into reality.

"We wanted the design to be unique and progressive but still in keeping with the character of the neighbourhood and this award demonstrates that, together, we achieved that goal."

Says Andrew Lightfoot, Director at Calderpeel: "We believe passionately that architecture should address our changing lifestyles. Hillcrest Homes' exciting brief for this house presented us with the opportunity to create a contemporary architectural solution that uses space, light, form and materials in exciting and cutting edge ways to meet the needs of the 21st century home. Our challenge was to produce an elegant and romantic design in harmony with the rural village setting. We are delighted with the finished house and proud to have been acknowledged for such an outstanding architectural solution."

The property is also the recipient of the fourth coveted 'Built in Quality' award and the second 'Built in Cheshire' award to be given to a Hillcrest home by Macclesfield Borough Council. A previous Hillcrest/Calderpeel collaboration, also in Prestbury, won the qualityaward in 2004.

The property is built from stone with memorable large glazed gables and a stunning oak framed pool house. Internal accommodation offers six bedrooms, a range of formal and informal reception rooms, a state-of-the-art SieMatic kitchen with a comprehensive range of appliances from Miele and Gaggenau as well as lavish individually styled bathrooms by Swiss masters Laufen.

Hillcrest Homes and Calderpeel have now turned their attention to the creation of a stunning new five bedroom detached home with indoor swimming pool on Hale's most prestigious road, Broadway
