As part of National Learning at Work day, Cruden Group marked the formal launch of  our in-house training and development programme at our annual apprentices day and awards ceremony.

Awards went to four apprentices who will now be signed up under the Escalate programme, which was developed to deliver a formal programme of training and development across all disciplines.

Cruden Group already invests more than £300,000 a year training and developing its 400 staff throughout the north-west - almost six days of training per employee. Escalate will bring a more cohesive approach to training in three main areas.

On the job - All vocational training including apprenticeships, NVQs and on-site learning

Professional - Degrees, diplomas and chartered institute qualification

Awareness -  Training corporate social responsibility, equality and diversity, health and safety and other industry issues

More than 50 representatives from local authorities and housing associations, colleges, universities and industry organisations attended the launch at the Imperial War Museum North.

The winning apprentices were Scott Callaghan (plumber of the year), Jonathon Dutton (bricklayer of the year), Daryl Cooper (joiner of the year), Christopher Hall (trainee of the year) and Kate Large (outstanding achievement).

Two other apprentices were highly commended – bricklayer Nathan Watkinson and joiner Michael Bird.

Stephen Morris, managing director of Cruden Construction, said: "Although training and development opportunities for all staff have always been an essential part of meeting our business objectives, they are also a core element of our culture which directly contributes to our differentiation in the construction market place and our competitive advantage in recruiting and retaining the right people. The launch of Escalate takes that approach significantly further."
