On cold and clear Friday in January 2011, a thirty strong team of Cruden volunteers, teachers, parents and support staff got to work at Lancasterian SEN School in Didsbury to get the first phase of the 'Garden Transformation Project' well underway.
As a partners contractor on the Manchester City Council Framework One, Cruden have been working closely with the school to deliver a £2.6m phased hand over refurbishment programme. With an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy at the school, Cruden were delighted to gather our volunteers to make a real difference to the courtyard gardens for the children and teachers to enjoy all year round.
The 'Garden Transformation Project' will be rolled out in phases. The most labour intensive phase 'the clean up' is now complete after the volunteers rolled up their sleeves to get the courtyards in top condition by clearing rubbish, cutting, trimming, potting, planting and even demolishing some tired looking concrete planters to create functional and appealing spaces. The next phases of the project will include
- Agree the school and stakeholder objectives for the next four key areas; the memorial garden, school entrance, courtyard and current site compound area
- Create a landscape design for each area
- Arrange a volunteering event for planting and potting in the spring
- Create an on-going maintenance plan and rota
As with all the activities at the school the children are at the heart of the 'Garden Transformation Project' they all presented their hopes and expectations for the new courtyards in a poster competition that was judged by the Cruden volunteers. All the entries were of a high standard but the winner depicted a tree created from painted hand and foot prints and she was thrilled to receive her book token prize and certificate on the day.
Evelyn Uche, Parent Support Advisor and coordinator on this project was delighted with the result the team had produced and commented 'A big thank you to Cruden and the team for investing your time and enthusiasm into this project, the children are all excited about the changes we are creating'.
